St. Julian's on a quiet morning is a different place entirely from the St. Julian's most people know. Before the cafes fill up and the promenade gets busy, there is a stillness to it that is perfect for photography.

We were at the waterfront early. The light was soft and even, the sea that particular shade of turquoise that Malta does so well. Behind us, the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel stood in full sun against a pale blue sky.

Malta as a Backdrop

One of the things I love most about shooting here is the layering of the landscape. In a single frame you can have crystal-clear Mediterranean water, centuries-old Baroque architecture, and warm morning light all working together. There is nowhere quite like it.

For this session, we kept things simple. The location was strong enough to carry the image on its own. The job was to find the right angle and the right moment — and then stay out of the way.

Sometimes the best thing a photographer can do is know when not to interfere.

Travelling to Malta for a Shoot

If you are visiting Malta and want to book a portrait session, the waterfront locations around St. Julian's and Sliema are some of my favourites. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best light and the quietest streets.
