Some of my favourite sessions come from people who are just passing through. Lauren and Dove flew in from Los Angeles for a holiday, and somewhere between the sightseeing and the sunshine, they decided to have their photographs taken. I am so glad they did.
We met at the Triton Fountain, right at the gates of Valletta, as the light was starting to soften. There is a moment there in the early evening when the water catches the last of the sun and the whole square turns gold. You have to be ready for it, because it does not last long.

Three Years, and Only the Beginning
Lauren and Dove have been together for three years, and they are engaged. You can see it in the way they are with each other. There is an ease there, a kind of quiet certainty, the sort of thing that makes my job wonderfully simple. I barely had to direct them. I just watched, waited, and let them be. The red dress against the warm stone of the fountain was a gift. Some things you plan, and some things simply work. This was one of the ones that simply worked.
The best photographs happen when two people forget the camera is even there.
Malta Now, Thailand Next
This winter, Lauren and Dove are getting married in Thailand. A world away from this fountain, under a completely different sky. I love that their story is taking them across the globe, and I love even more that a little piece of Malta gets to be part of it. If you are visiting the islands and want to hold onto how a moment felt, not just how it looked, this is exactly the kind of session I live for. I would love to hear from you.
