I don't step into the studio very often. My heart usually belongs outside, somewhere in the Malta light. But every now and then someone comes along who makes me want to close the door, roll out a clean backdrop, and just play. This summer, that someone was Ivana. Ivana is one of those people who fills a room the moment she walks in. She is funny in a way that catches you completely off guard, warm in a way that makes you feel like you have known her for years, and right now she is carrying a little boy named Vincent, due in October. One Last Plate of Pasta

She will have Vincent in Prague, where she lives with her husband Peter. But before that day comes, she has one small wish. One more trip to Milan. One more table full of proper Italian food, eaten slowly and happily, before life changes forever. Ivana loves food, and lately, with all the cravings, she loves it even more. I really hope she makes that trip.

"I just want to meet him," she told me. "I want to finally see his face."

What She Is Really Thinking About

While she was here, we got to talking one evening, and I asked her the two questions I always find myself wanting to know. What are you most excited about, and what are you most worried about. The excitement was simple. To meet him. To finally see the little person she has been carrying and dreaming about for so long. The worry made us all smile. She is not sure whether Vincent will like them. Their lifestyle, their vibe, the way they spend their days. We told her not to give it a second thought. Anyone lucky enough to land in her world is going to adore it. Vincent is going to fit right in, the way he was always meant to. Ivana, maternity studio session in Malta

Pepsi, Chief Bodyguard

Then there is Pepsi to think about. Pepsi is their bull terrier, getting on in years now, and completely and utterly devoted to Ivana. She follows her everywhere. She has been known to refuse to let Ivana go to the bathroom on her own. Ivana cannot wait to introduce her to the newest member of the family, and honestly, neither can we. Something tells me Pepsi is about to appoint herself chief bodyguard. And the name. Vincent. I love it. Cool, timeless, a little bit film star. It reminds us of Vin Diesel, which is no bad thing at all, although we are all quietly hoping Vincent arrives with a bit more hair. Ivana, these frames are for you and for Vincent. Whenever you look back at them, I hope you remember exactly how loved he was, long before he ever arrived.

If you are expecting and would love maternity photographs that feel warm, personal and truly yours, I would love to hear from you.
